3/24/2024 0 Comments Dark sun original boxed map of tyr![]() ![]() I'll be the first to admit I'm not a demographer but even if the Dragon only took sick and elderly slaves in some kinda AD&D version of Hogan's Run, in a place where running out of food and water is the primary hazard of every adventurer, there just wouldn't be enough food and water support a population of people to support 2,000 years of the levy from only 7 small city states. If Kalak had any power just 50 miles away he wouldn't have hesitated to enslave Kled and destroy Alturuk. For example, Alturuk is 50 miles from Tyr and has a preserver that runs the place that provides support to the Veiled Alliance. I don't think the city state really controls much out of the sight of its walls. Kled, is only 30 miles from Tyr and is a free village. The mudflats around Draj, but they're not that big. Once again, my fingers were too slow for my brain, I meant to say "acres and acres" to imply miles of land, but we don't know how many miles around each city state is controlled by the city and used for farming. Food preservation is also easy in a place with such low humidity and such high temperatures. Merchant dynasties are big players, and there are many fantastic beasts of burden that have no non-technological analogs in the real world. I'm not an anthropologist though.Īlso, the Tyr region does have an impressive degree of trade, all things considered. That said, I am positive the Tyr region, partly from necessity, partly from having much more/better central planing, partly from having a year round growing season everywhere, and partly from a huge portion of the population being slaves, is more productive than most real world primitive societies. I tried to keep my figures limited to nations that didn't import the majority of their food, and generally figured they were still twice as productive per unit of arable land as the Tyr region.
